چکیده

We study the antiferrodistortive instability and its interaction with ferroelectricity in cubic perovskite compounds. Our first-principles calculations show that coexistence of both instabilities is very common. We develop a firstprinciples scheme to study the thermodynamics of these compounds when both instabilities are present, and apply it to SrTiO3. We find that increased pressure enhances the antiferrodistortive instability while suppressing the ferroelectric one. Moreover, the presence of one instability tends to suppress the other. A very rich P–T phase diagram results. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. 77.80.Bh, 61.50.Lt, 64.60.Cn, 64.70.-p Typeset using REVTEX

First - principles theory of structural phase transitions for perovskites : competing instabilities

We extend our previous first-principles theory for perovskite ferroelectric phase transitions to treat also antiferrodistortive phase transitions. Our approach involves construction of a model Hamiltonian from a Taylor expansion, first-principles calculations to determine expansion parameters, and Monte Carlo simulations to study the resulting system. We apply this approach to three cubic perov...

Observation of a sample-dependent 37K anomaly on the lattice parameters of strontium titanate

– The lattice parameters of tetragonal strontium titanate are determined to about 1 part in 10 with penetrating X-rays. While no peculiarity is detected in a bulk sample, a distinct anomaly at 37K is observed in an optically polished thin platelet derived from the same single crystal. This suggests that the anomaly is related to a high density of dislocations. A possible mechanism is that dislo...

Direct Observation of Dynamic Symmetry Breaking above Room Temperature in Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite

Lead halide perovskites such as methylammonium lead triiodide (CH3NH3PbI3) have outstanding optical and electronic properties for photovoltaic applications, yet a full understanding of how this solution-processable material works so well is currently missing. Previous research has revealed that CH3NH3PbI3 possesses multiple forms of static disorder regardless of preparation method, which is sur...

Lone pair effect, structural distortions, and potential for superconductivity in Tl perovskites.

Drawing the analogy to BaBiO3, we investigate via ab initio electronic structure calculations potential new superconductors of the type ATlX3 with A = Rb and Cs and X = F, Cl, and Br, with a particular emphasis on RbTlCl3. On the basis of chemical reasoning, supported by the calculations, we show that Tl-based perovskites have structural and charge instabilities driven by the lone pair effect, ...

Phonon Softening and Elastic Instabilities in the Cubic-to-Orthorhombic Structural Transition of CsH

The cubic-to-orthorhombic structural transition occurring in CsH at a pressure of about 17 GPa is studied by ab initio calculations. The relative stability of the competing structures and the transition pressure are correctly predicted. We show that this pressure-induced first-order transition is intimately related to a displacive second-order transition which would occur upon application of a ...
